LinkedIn Nightmare
I've heard about LinkedIn for a long time and decided it was about time I set up an account. Recently I've been reserving names as I think of them on gmail, twitter, etc. for my married name once that time comes. I just didn't want to get to "I Do" and have all the cool ones with my last name already taken or have to spend hours at once setting up new accounts. Soooo, one fateful afternoon I got this bright idea to go ahead and set up a LinkedIn for Rebecca Whitfield Dishman. No harm done, right? I'll just connect with people once I'm married and have a license to actually use that name, right? NO! Much to my HORROR LinkedIn is set up to automatically search your gmail contact list and locate everyone you've EVER EMAILED who has a profile with their website and send them a nice little notification letting them know "Rebecca Whitfield Dishman" just joined linkedin and would like to be YOUR friend.
I set up my little profile full of resume info and went on my merry little way, looking forward to July. My happy bubble was sufficiently busted when I started getting emails and ims within minutes of setting up my profile. Some people thought I had eloped while others harassed me to no end for being anxious to use my last name. One of my attorneys even emailed and asked who this Dishman character is who claims to be employed as a paralegal in our office. I even "friended" my florist for the wedding just days after handing over my deposit to her, an ex-boyfriend, my Dad's co-worker and on and on the list goes.... Talk about wanting to crawl under a table and die.
You'd think this lovely little nightmare of 3 weeks ago would go away....oh but no. From time to time I still get emails telling me of someone else who has just connected with my profile.
I'm not really sure what the moral of this story is, but I figured if you can't change a nightmare, your friends can at least get a good laugh out of it.
